A lot of people look down on homeless people but most of them are so sane, sweet and humble when you actually just give them a chance and talk to them. A lot of them don’t even expect anything from you but to be acknowledged but their eyes always light up when I offer them some food, water, change, or a cigarette after talking for a few minutes when they are already grateful for me stopping to talk to them when most people just walk past them without even a smile. All of them are lonely and just want to feel noticed and like their existence mattered. I can’t tell you the number of times a homeless person has been so thankful towards me when I see them lying behind a trash can asleep and go into a store to buy a bag full of food and water, slip a few cigarettes in the bag, come back to where I saw them and leave the bag right next to them. Some wake up frightened thinking I am going to hurt or mess with them but when they see I’m just trying to help when I wasn’t obligated to, it always almost brings tears to their eyes.
